Într-un oraș devastat de mizerie, corupție și lăcomie, își face apariția Joe (Clint Eastwood), un cowboy solitar. Scopul lui e să se îmbogățească, iar acest oraș este un loc foarte bun pentru a începe. Clanurile adverse care fac legea în San Miguel sunt Baxter și Rojo, iar încet încet, Joe va face tot posbilul să le extermine și să se umple de bani de pe urma lor.

Ennio Morricone, un geniu al muzicii, a compus tema muzicală a filmului, care a fost, este, și va fi mereu una dintre capodoperele muzicii și un adevărat emblem pentru filmele western. Regizor este Sergio Leone, ajutat de Monte Hellman.
